HOMEWORK
Philosophy:
Homework is for practice, and to share with family members what we are This learning in class. I do not grade homework; however, I do check it for understanding, correcting habits that could cause problems down the road. Students earn points for turning in their homework which then leads to rewards. This informs me that your student is practicing at home, those skills that we have learned in class, such as summarizing, stop -n- jot notes, and use of/creating a graphic organizer to retain what has been read. We will use iReady as our curriculum, online and hard copies, however, we will have novel studies throughout the year, utilizing literature circles for students to interact with each other about what they are reading. Because Reading and Writing go hand in hand, we will have Vocabulary weekly as well as grammar and punctuation lessons on a routine basis. Students will be responsible for setting personal goals with their online iReady lessons while tracking their growth and sharing it monthly with Mrs. Russo. There will be incentives for completion each quarter, as well as a BIG incentive for the end of the school year for the students that complete their goals. More information to come, at a later date regarding our incentives. Students will have time in class to complete their online iReady lessons, however, if they have access to a computer or tablet at home, iReady lessons may be completed at home as well. Please be aware that each student is responsible for a pair of headphones to plug into a laptop (or desktop) while at school. This assists the students with fewer distractions so to focus while completing their lessons. Small groups will be working around the classroom and small group discussions will taking place, so headphones are a requirement in Mrs. Russo's classes. If a student takes them home in their bookbag, they need to be sure to bring them back for their next Reading class.
